"The founding fathers and the Pilgrims are two separate groups."
Spoken by Evan, a caller on the KPCC Patt Morrison show, to explain why he does not feel the argument for Proposition 8 can be based on religion, though many of our Founding Fathers were religious.
Less than an hour ago, the rumor trickled onto Twitter. Many refused to retweet and cautioned against rumors before the official ruling. Then it became official and the social networks exploded.
Proposition 8 was ruled unconstitutional.
From the ruling: "Plaintiffs do not seek recognition of a new right. To characterize plaintiffs' objective as "the right to same-sex marriage" would suggest that plaintiffs seek something different from what opposite-sex couples across the state enjoy -- namely, marriage. Rather, plaintiffs ask California to recognize their relationships for what they are: marriages," says 9th Circuit District Court Judge Vaughn Walker in a 136-page statement released.
He continued, "California...has already issued 18,000 marriage licenses to same-sex couples and has not suffered any demonstrated harm as a result."
KPCC will continue taking calls until 3:30pm Pacific time today. You can call 866-893-KPCC or write on the Facebook Patt Morrison page to get your comments on the air.
Are you celebrating or writing the appeal? Were you there? Do you know people who want to get married? Should marriage be separated entirely from religion? Comment below.
