For all you film buffs out there, here’s a sneak peek into 11 Bollywood movies to look forward to, in the rest of 2011. The release dates mentioned in parenthesis may be subject to change.
7 KHOON MAAF (February 18)
Starring: Priyanka Chopra, Neil Nitin Mukesh, John Abraham, Irrfan Khan, Aleksandr Dyachenko, Annu Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Vivaan Shah; Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj
Based on a book by Ruskin Bond titled Suzanna’s Seven Husbands, the movie revolves around Priyanka Chopra who plays Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes. The beautiful Susanna gets married seven times and all her seven husbands die an untimely death. The mysterious nature of their death makes Susanna a prime suspect.
GAME (April 1)
Starring: Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Jimmy Shergill, Shahana Goswami, Sarah Jane Dias, Kangana Ranaut, Gauhar Khan and Anupam Kher; Directed by Abhinay Deo
Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and dialogues by Farhan Akhtar, Game is a nail biting suspense thriller in which a murder is being investigated. Four complete strangers – a drug lord, a politician, a journalist and a movie star are invited to an island. Each one of them is a suspect and each one of them has a motive.
DUM MAARO DUM (April 22)
Starring: Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, Aditya Pancholi, Prateik Babbar; Directed by Rohan Sippy
Another action-thriller starring Abhishek, the movie has been shot in Goa and documents the story of a drug nexus in the popular tourist state. According to reports, the Bachchan kid will portray an “angry young cop” image, like the one depicted by his father in Zanjeer. Adding spice to the movie is Deepika Padukone in a special appearance, performing an item number on the remix of the title track.
READY (May 27)
Starring: Salman Khan, Asin, Arya Babbar, Paresh Rawal, Mahesh Manjrekar; Directed by Anees Bazmee
A remake of a blockbuster Telugu film with the same name, it tells the story of a young girl who falls in love with the man who helps her elope form her own wedding. Incidentally, the original Ready was one of the highest grosser among Telugu movies in the United States.
ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA (June 24)
Starring: Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif, Koechlin; Directed by Zoya Akhtar
Shot extensively in Spain, like Farhan Akhtar’s previous movies, namely Dil Chahta Hai and Rock On, this movie too is a fun-filled film about the friendship between three young men.
DELHI BELLY (July 1)
Starring: Imran Khan, Vir Das, Poorna Jagannathan, Kunal Roy Kapoor, Shenaz Treasurywala; Directed by Abhinay Deo
Again produced by Aamir Khan for his “bhanja”, Delhi Belly is a comedy about youngsters who get themselves into a mess. As the title of the movie suggests, all the happenings take place in Delhi. On the face of it, the movie apparently looks quite similar to Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, written and directed by Guy Ritchie.
ROCKSTAR (July 15)
Starring:Ranbir Kapoor, Nargis Fakhri, Aditi Rao Hydari; Directed by Imtiaz Ali
Co-produced by Eros international and Shri Ashtavinayak Cine Vision, the movie is about the life of a rock star played by Ranbir. Aditi plays the role of a journalist. She is the narrator of the movie, connecting Ranbir’s character to the audience.
SHORT TERM SHAADI (October 6)
Starring: Imran Khan, Kareena Kapoor; Directed by Shakun Batra
Imran and Kareena play a young couple who get drunk in a Vegas casino and get married in their inebriated condition. The story reminds one of the movie, What Happens In Vegas, starring Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. However, producer Karan Johar has denied that his movie is an adaptation of the Hollywood film.
AGENT VINOD (December 9)
Starring:Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor; Directed by Sriram Raghavan
The movie is a spy thriller in which Saif plays the role of a secret agent. Kareena Kapoor in a negative role is said to sport many different looks in the movie.
LADIES V/S RICKY BAHL (December 9)
Starring:Ranvir Singh, Anushka Sharma, Parineeti Chopra; Directed by Maneesh Sharma
Kareena and Saif face stiff competition from the pair of Band Baaja Baaraat. Made under the Yash Raj banner and story by Aditya Chopra, Ladies V/S Ricky Bahl releases on the same day as Agent Vinod. The movie is a fun-filled romantic comedy about a young and charming conman, Ranvir, who meets his match in Anushka. Making her debut in the movie is Priyanka Chopra’s cousin, Parineeti Chopra.
DON 2: THE CHASE CONTINUES (December 23)
Starring:ShahRukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, Boman Irani, Kunal Kapoor; Directed by Farhan Akhtar
After Game and Zindagi Na Milege Dobara, next winter, Farhan Akhtar will be back with the sequel to his movie Don: The Chase Begins. Partly shot in Berlin, Don 2 will see ShahRukh as a European crime lord. This time around the Don will attempt to capture the entire European market as opposed to only the Indian market, and will have cops all over the world chasing him. Moviegoers can also look forward to Hrithik Roshan playing a cameo role in the movie.
