Fort Worth Vet under investigation: Suspected of keeping deceased pets alive

In a new, bizarre story the Camp Bowie Animal Clinic and head veterinarian are currently under investigation in Fort Worth, Texas. The reason? Pet owners say their animals were being kept alive for blood transfusions after they were told they had been put to sleep.

According to the Star-Telegram Jamie and Marian Harris said they had taken the family’s then four-year-old Leonberger, Sid, into the Camp Bowie Animal Clinic in Fort Worth to be examined by veterinarian Lou Tierce in May 2013. The couple said by October of 2013 Dr. Tierce had told them the animal needed to be euthanized due to an incurable degenerative spinal condition.

Recently, the Harris family was told by a former employee of the clinic that her beloved dog had not been euthanized. In fact, he was kept alive to supply blood to other animals. He was still alive and well at the clinic where he had been left.

The Harris's were furious and demanded an investigation.

“The biggest hurt in all of this is the deception and what it means with something that means so much to you,” she told the Star-Telegram. “Our pets are family members.”

As details emerge, it unwinds into what can almost become the making for a terribly disturbing movie.

The last time the Harris family saw their dog before agreeing to the euthanization, they said he could not stand up. But after they learned he was still alive, they hatched a plan and snuck into the back of the clinic. There, they saw their dog again.

They later returned and rescued him, but that's not enough for distraught family members who want justice.

Reportedly, other pet owners have returned to the clinic in hopes of finding their own pets thought to have been deceased. There is no word on if any have been successful in finding a pet.

Sid is currently under the care of a different veterinarian. The case is pending.
