Fort Wainwright Stryker soldier’s death under investigation

In news released this afternoon by Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, it was learned that the death of Spc. Corey R. Smathers is under investigation by the military.

Spc. Smathers, 22, a soldier from Fort Wainwright, died from a gunshot wound in the early hours of Saturday, March 2, in his car near University and Hess Avenues in Fairbanks.

From Glouster, Ohio, Spc. Smathers was an infantryman with the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.

His body was found by Alaska State Troopers. There was no mention of foul play.

The Army released information that Smathers entered the Army in March of 2010 and did basic training and AIT at Fort Benning, Ga. He arrived at Fort Wainwright in July of the same year.

Spc. Smathers’ family has been notified but they have not released information regarding funeral arrangements.

It is not known if there was a pending combat deployment ahead for Spc. Smathers.
