Fort Hood Soldier accused of child molestation

A $50,000 bail has been set for an active-duty Soldier currently based at Fort Hood, Texas, who is accused of sexually abusing a female child under the age of 14. According to court documents, the abuse happened multiple times over the course of a year.

Staff Sgt. William Lester Shawl, III, 28, was arrested yesterday by Copperas Cove police and remains in custody in the Coryell County jail. It is unknown at this time if military authorities will also prosecute Shawl for the alleged abuses.

William Lester Shawl III, is a staff sergeant with 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. His identity was released to news sources yesterday.

At this time it is unknown if the child who was allegedly molested was a family member or friend of the family. Apparently Shawl is unmarried at this time. It is unclear if Shawl has children of his own.

Copperas Cove is a community of less than 35,000 residents, many of whom work for or in conjunction with the military at nearby Fort Hood.

Additional information is available to media sources by contacting the Coryell County Sheriff’s Department or Copperas Police Department. Victims of sexual abuse are never named in the press.
