An active shooter is reportedly on base at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas. According to local station KCEN-TV, several people have been injured after a gunman opened fire at approximately 4:25 p.m. CDT on April 2, 2014.
KSTU-TV, a Fox affiliate, reports that the gunman is still at large and is "said to be in building 33026 which is the Medical Brigade Building." KVUE and KBTX are both reporting on Twitter that at least one person is dead, but this has not been confirmed.
The official Fort Hood Twitter account announced at approximately 5 p.m. CDT that there is a shelter in place order for all base personnel.
The following update was posted on the Fort Hood Facebook page at 6:40 p.m. CDT:
Fort Hood's Directorate of Emergency Services has an initial report that a shooter is dead but this is unconfirmed. The injured personnel are being transported to Carl R. Darnall Medical Center and other local hospitals. Numerous law enforcement agencies are in support and on the scene. The number of injured are not confirmed at this time. No further details are known at this time. There has been a shooting at Fort Hood and injuries are reported. Emergency crews are on the scene. No further details are known at this time. KCEN reports that there may be victims in the Battle Simulation Center on 65th and Warehouse.
Lt. Donnie Adams with the Bell County Sheriff’s Office told CNN reporters on Wednesday afernoon that personnel at Fort Hood had not asked for any assistance but they were aware that there is a shooter on the base.
"They got some kind of shooting incident going on. They haven’t told us anything. It was on post and being handled by the military. Fort Hood has not asked for any assistance."
USA Today reports that at least "20 rounds were shot outside" before the shooter went in to the medical brigade building. A soldier on base stated that there may be a standoff situation.
Nearby Central Texas College in Killeen is evacuating its campus. KVUE reports that all evening and night classes have been canceled.
