Late today, the Department of Defense announced the death of a Fort Carson soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
Sgt. Mark H. Schoonhoven, 38, of Plainwell, Mich., died Jan. 20, 2013, at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
Sgt. Schoonhoven and his unit were attacked by enemy forces with an improvised explosive device on Dec. 15, 2012 in Kabul, Afghanistan.
There was no information regarding other soldiers who might have been injured in this same attack.
Sg. Schoonhoven was assigned to the 32nd Transportation Company, 43rd Sustainment Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.
The family has not released information regarding public or private services for their soldier.
