Forney family uses Christmas lights to help the needy

On Friday, December 16 and Saturday, December 17, 2011, the Mathis family once again used their outstanding Christmas lights display to help the less fortunate. This year, they did it at a new house in a new neighborhood, but still pulled off a beautiful sight. The event is now taking place at 247 Graham in the Fox Hollow subdivision in Forney.

Chris Mathis has run the Forney Light Show with the help of his wife Camber at their home each Christmas season since 2007. Over the summer the Mathis’s moved from their previous residence because, as Chris stated, “We have a new baby and I wanted less property to take care of but a bigger house for our family.” They settled into their beautiful new home and in November they began setting up the “computerized Christmas light show that is synchronized to your favorite holiday music”. According to Chris Mathis, he already has neighbors who want to take part in it next year and decorate their houses.

While I was there on Saturday, December 17, Santa Claus (aka Chris’ dad) was in full Santa gear talking to those who stopped to see the show. He handed out candy canes and pointed everyone in the direction of the helper elf to donate canned goods and toys for two local causes. The New Life Food Pantry in Forney and the Kaufman County Children’s Advocacy Center were the recipients of the donations.

Every year the show is a little different and easily the best part of this years display was the secret white box near the Mathis’s window. After the Christmas music died down, a voice came over the air to talk about the soldiers who would be home for Christmas, and those who never would. An image of a camouflage-clad soldier appeared in the white box as the narrator told the touching story. It moved a few in the crowd to tears.

You still have time this year to go see this awesome display of the Christmas spirit in Forney. The Forney Light Show at 247 Graham runs from 6 pm until 10:00 pm Sunday – Thursday and 6 pm until 11:00 pm Friday and Saturday. The last showing will be on January 6, 2012. They will not have the display on if the weather is wet or rainy.
