Two engineers will be leaving Red Bull's Formula 1 racing team in the 2014 season and joining rival team Mercedes. The announcement was made on Thursday, December 19 on the Mercedes AMG-Petronas website.

In June of 2014, Mark Ellis will join the Mercedes team as Performance Director. At the same time, Giles Wood will come to the team and assume the role of Chief Engineer, Simulation and Development.

According to Mercedes, "These two newly created roles will further strengthen the team's technical organization, particularly in the fields of simulation and vehicle dynamics."

The move follows recent confirmation that Team Principal Ross Brawn will step down from his position at the end of 2013.

Mercedes came in second in the FIA Formula 1 Constructors' World Championship in 2013 with 360 points, behind Red Bull with 596.

Luring away talent may be one strategy among many that Mercedes hopes to employ in its efforts to beat Red Bull in 2014. At the FIA Prize-Giving gala earlier in the month, non-executive chairman and triple-champion driver, Niki Lauda, told quadruple World Champion Sebastian Vettel that he did not know what it would take for Mercedes to beat Red Bull, but that the team was certainly going to try.
