The Ferrari Formula 1 team issued a statement on its official website Monday, December 30, regarding its multi-World Champion racer, Michael Schumacher's ski accident over the weekend. Mr. Schumacher fell while skiing in the French Alps on Sunday and is currently in a coma in critical condition in a Grenoble hospital. Ferrari stated that the entire team has been in "a state of anxiety" since hearing the news.

"Everyone at Ferrari has been in a state of anxiety since hearing about Michael Schumacher’s accident," reads the Formula 1 team statement. "That includes the president, Luca di Montezemolo, who through the Scuderia team principal Stefano Domenicali is in constant contact with the family and those close to the German champion. Montezemolo has offered his encouragement and support at this very difficult time, with the hope that better news will come soon."

Michael Schumacher won five of his seven Formula 1 World Championships while driving for Ferrari, and those five wins were consecutive -- 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004. The champion's other two wins came earlier, while he raced for Benetton in 1994 and 1995.

After retiring a first time at the end of the 2006 season, Mr. Schumacher stayed on with Ferrari as an advisor. When he decided to return to racing for the 2010 season, he joined Mercedes. After unsuccessfully mounting a winning comeback, the racer retired a second time at the end of the 2012 season.

The champion is joined by his family at his bedside while he remains in critical condition. His family consists of his wife Corinna, daughter Gina-Maria, and son Mick, 14 who was out skiing with him when the accident occurred.

Ferrari came in third in the constructors' championship in 2013, but its driver Fernando Alonso came in second in the drivers' championship.

Photos of Ferrari flags presumably laid on the ground by fans outside the hospital where Schumacher is being treated surfaced on the Internet on Monday.
