The controversy over what actually happened at “The Young and the Restless” that caused Michael Muhney’s hasty termination wages on, and on Jan. 3, before the rumors became fodder for public consumption, Daytime Confidential shared former “Y&R” executive Maria Arena Bell thoughts regarding the “problematic storytelling” caused by current executive producer Jill Farren Phelps.

Upon finding out that Michael Muhney had been abruptly let go from his role as Adam Newman on “The Young and the Restless”, Maria Arena Bell told Soap Opera Digest that Muhney had brought “amazing dimension and complexity to the role”. The former “Y&R” executive producer went on to say that the dark love story of Adam and Sharon was “derailed” last year. Maria Arena Bell also told Soap Opera Digest that she was not surprised that the show would “look for a solution to their problematic storytelling decisions.”

Mark Perigard of The Boston Herald best summed it up when he said called Jill Farren Phelps the “Madame DeFarge” of daytime.

“The longer [Jill Farren Phelps] is at the show, the more heads roll, and the exodus of top talent at this CBS serial has been astonishing.”

Jill Farren Phelps was at the helm of Santa Barbara, Another World and Guiding Light when the soap operas were cancelled. Many believe Phelps to be the kiss of death to soap operas.
