Former ‘Y&R’ and ‘L.A. Law’ guest star James Avery dies after open heart surgery

James Avery, best known for his role as Judge Philip Banks on the NBC comedy “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has passed away due to complications from open heart surgery. The veteran of not only television by the United States Navy, James Avery guest starred on several television shows, including “LA Law”, “The Young and the Restless” and “Grey’s Anatomy”.

The Los Angeles Times reported James Avery's death on Jan. 2, noting that the actor ranked number 34 of TV Guide’s “50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time”. James Avery died on Tuesday, Dec. 31 in a hospital n Glendale, Calif. His death was confirmed by his manager, Toni Benson. James Avery is survived by Barbara Avery, his wife of 26 years, his mother Florence Avery and his stepson Kevin Waters.

James Avery guest starred on “The Young and the Restless” as Judge Roy Daley who presided over Phyllis Newman's trial in 2012. From 1998 until 1992 James Avery had a recurring role as Judge Michael Conover on the NBC drama “L.A. Law”. James Avery also guest starred as Sam on "Grey's Anatomy" in 2012.
