Former USC Trojans baseball player Grant Green came up big at the 2011 All-Star Futures game, helping the U.S. team capture the victory over the World team and earning Most Valuable Player honors in the process.
Green, a shortstop selected 13th overall by the Oakland Athletics in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft, relieved second-base prospect Jason Kipnis in the fifth inning of the 2011 All-Star Futures game on Sunday, and proceeded to record two doubles and help the U.S. squad capture a 6-4 win.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound infielder was very productive during his three-year stint as a member of the USC baseball family, starting 160 games with a career batting average of .359, good for sixth all-time in Trojans' history.
Green played all of last season with Oakland's Class-A team in Stockton, where he hit .318 with 20 home runs, 107 runs and 87 RBIs in 131 contests.
This season, Green has played exclusively for the Athletics' Class-AA Texas League affiliate, the Midland RockHounds. In 76 games thus far, the sweet-hitting shortstop holds a .288 average (90-for-352), with 4 homers, 42 runs and 40 RBIs.
