According to multiple reports former Texas Tech quarterback and Houston Cougar co-offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury will be the new offensive coordinator at Texas A&M. Kingbury was the first quarterback of the Mike Leach era at Texas Tech. He later played for several NFL teams before returning to the college game. He was named the assistant coach of the year in 2011.
It seems a little odd for him to be going to Texas A&M, given that he was not a favorite of Texas A&M fans during his playing days at Texas Tech. Plenty of Texas Tech fans will remember the days when the Aggies referred to Texas Tech’s offense as being a gimmick and having disdain for Mike Leach and his “air raid” offense.
Well, now it appears that at least a version of the Mike Leach offense will be headed to College Station. It seems doubtful that Kingsbury would be hired to run a traditional, run based attack. That gimmicky offense that the Aggies used to mock will likely be their offense.
A few years ago, during a piece on 60 minutes, New York Times reporter Michael Lewis observed that if Mike Leach ever got the kind of talent that the traditional powers had, the rest of the college football world would be in trouble. Mike Leach still does not have that type of talent. However, Kliff Kingsbury might have that opportunity. The Aggies have always seen themselves as a traditional power and have had historically strong recruiting classes.
So the question becomes, is the rest of the football world in trouble with the marriage of Kliff Kingsbury, the “air raid” offense, and Texas A&M’s talent? While it’s true that Kingsbury is not the head coach at Texas A&M, if he is successful, he will be a head coach very soon. Actually, Texas Tech Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury has a nice ring to it.
