The Arizona Fall League will begin play on October 8, 2013 and the New York Yankees have selected seven prospects to represent the organization in Arizona. The Scottsdale Scorpions is comprised of players from the New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants, New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Of the seven selected, five have played with the Tampa Yankees and the remaining two will definitely be arriving in Tampa shortly. Below is a list of the Yankees’ Arizona Fall League selections:
Brett Gerritse (RHP): Gerritse was drafted in the 12th Round of the 2009 MLB Draft; He has spent the last two and a half seasons with the Class- A Charleston RiverDogs. In 2013 he maintained a 8-7 record along with a (ERA 3.56) and striking out 108 batters in 101 innings of work.
Fred Lewis (LHP): Lewis was drafted in the 47th Round of 2010 MLB Draft out of Tennessee Wesleyan College. He played for the Tampa Yankees in 2013 appearing in 8 games as he struck out 19 batters in 14 innings. HE was then promoted to the Double-A Trenton Thunder where he played 20 games and by the end of the season made it to Triple- A Scranton.
Vidal Nuno (LHP): Nuno was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 48th Round of the 2009 MLB Draft but was signed by the New York Yankees in 2011. Nuno played with the Tampa Yankees in 2012 making 11 appearances. He made his MLB debut in 2013 as he made 5 appearances with the Yankees.
James Pazos (LHP): Pazos was drafted by the New York Yankees in 2012 in the 13th Round of the MLB Draft out of the University of San Diego. Pazos spent the 2013 season with the Charleston RiverDogs as a reliever as he maintained a (3-1) record in 25 games.
Peter O’Brien: O’Brien is one of the Yankees top catching prospects after being drafted in the 2nd Round of the 2012 MLB Draft. He began the 2013 season with the Charleston RiverDogs recording a .325 batting average, 11 homeruns and 41 RBIS in 53 games. He was then promoted to the Tampa Yankees where he had a .265 batting average along with 11 homeruns and 55 RBIs.
Tyler Austin (1B/RF): At the beginning of the 2013 season, Austin was named the 3rd best prospect in the New York Yankees’ system. He was drafted in the 13th Round of the 2010 MLB Draft. HE played with the Tampa Yankees in 2012 before being to Trenton where he played the entire 2013 season in 83 games racking up 40RBIS.
Mason n Williams (CF):At the start of the 2013 season, Williams was named the 2nd best prospect in the New York Yankees Organization. He was drafted in the 4th Round of the 2010 MLB Draft. He played with the Tampa Yankees in 22 games in the 2012 season where he maintained a .277 batting average and then 100 games in 2013 with a .261 average before being promoted to Double-A Trenton.
