Former Tampa Yankee outfielder Abe Almonte was traded to the Seattle Mariners this week. Almonte was traded for right-handed relief pitcher Shawn Kelley who was recently designated for assignment by Seattle.
The 23 year old Almonte played for the T-Yanks during the 2010 and 2011 seasons. He maintained a .265 batting average and played a solid defensive effort in the outfield. Almonte spent the 2012 season in Double-A Trenton where he racked up a .276 batting average along with 25 RBIs, 17 doubles and 4 homeruns.
Shawn Kelley was drafted in the 2007 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners in the 13th round. Kelley made his Major League debut in 2009 where he had a 5-4 record along with a 4.50 ERA. In the last three seasons, he has made several appearances between the Major League and Triple-A Tacoma. Kelley could provide more depth in the New York Yankees pitching staff, primarily in the relief role.
Stay tuned for more New York Yankees’ Spring Training updates.
