October 29, U.S. Men's National Team and former New England Revolution midfielder Clint Dempsey scored his 36 English Premier League (EPL) goal for Fulham, tieing legend Brian McBride's record for most goals scored by an American in the EPL.
Dempsey's first-half goal for Fulham in the 2-0 win over Wigan marked his third goal of the season.
"I'm happy we got the points today and I'm sure people back home in the States like to see me doing well," said Dempsey. "The funny thing is we've played some good football in the last few weeks and not got the results, whereas today we may not have played our best but we got the points. It's crazy how it works sometimes."
June 3, Dempsey was named Fulham Player of the Year for scoring a career-high 12 Premier League goals in one season. With that achievement, he now holds the record for the highest number of goals in a single season for an American in the Premier League.
Dempsey and the U.S. National Team
Dempsey, 28, is only the second American to score goals in two different FIFA World Cup finals tournaments - 2006 and 2010. At the conclusion of the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals, he held 9th place in shots-on-goal while performing in only four of the first five possible games. Dempsey has scored 23 goals in 80 appearances with the USMNT.
Dempsey and the Revolution
Dempsey began his professional career when he was selected eighth overall in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft by the New England Revolution and went on to score seven goals and earn 2004 MLS Rookie of the Year Honors. In 2005, Dempsey scored ten goals, added nine assists and scored the game-winning goal in the Eastern Conference final. He scored eight more goals in the 2006 season and in December, Fulham offered MLS $4 million for Dempsey, the largest amount ever offered for an MLS player at that time.
