Former President Bill Clinton made a special appearance at the New York City
College of Technology (NYT), Klitgord Center in Brooklyn to announce his endorsement for Andrew Cuomo’s gubernatorial candidacy.
The event drew more than 1,200 supporters there to show their dedication to Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and especially Bill Clinton.
Once Mr. Clinton appeared on stage he was met with thunderous applauds from the 1,200+ constituents who bared the unbearable heat of what seemed like 80 degrees inside NYT’s Klitgord Center for about two hours just to get a glimpse of the former President of the United States.
Mr. Clinton was quoted saying: “I care a lot about this race, not only because Andrew Cuomo is my friend but because he made such an important contribution to my administration for eight years, also I used to be a Governor. I know the shape and nature of New York’s emergence through this financial crisis,” said Clinton.
He went on to say: “How well you come out depends upon the Governor of New York, depends upon making these budgeting decisions in a way that maintains a commitment to education and preserves decent health care and public service.”
Cuomo served under Clinton as the Assistant Secretary of Community Planning and Development at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Bill Clinton also stated: “He took office at a time when the agency was designated as a high risk. … but Andrew went to work and turned it around.”
Andrew Cuomo is the son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, which many say gives him an extra footing in the state's political scene in addition to his 8 years with the Clinton Administration. He won the endorsement of Mayor Michael Bloomberg in September.
Despite being criticized for pushing bankers to give out mortgage loans in the hopes of increasing home ownership across the nation, this move, says critics, contributed to the financial crisis Cuomo is now hoping to remedy.
In addition, Cuomo is also being slammed in the media for continuing his support of Congressman Charlie Rangel, who is currently awaiting trial by the House Ethics Committee on 13 separate violations of ethics rules.
According to the Quinnipiac University poll released on Wednesday, Cuomo has a 55 to 35 percent lead over Republican opponent Carl Paladino, who is currently being referred to as “the candidate with his foot in his mouth.”
Clinton railed against Paladino. He charged that the fiery candidate prefers dictatorships “as a form of government.” Paladino has recently been bashed in the media and political circles for his political stands on: education, same sex marriage and Albany political matters.
Before packing the humid Klitgord Center, those lined up outside the rally, while admitting they liked Cuomo, said Clinton was the main draw for their attendance.
Mr. Clinton showed his great appreciation for the adulation by speaking with as many constituents as possible as well as posing for photographs and signing autographs before pulling off in his all black tinted windowed SUV along with his secret service in tow.
