The Philadelphia Union’s preseason has officially come to a close. The team will return to Philadelphia tomorrow to start focusing solely on the regular season and the home opener on March 2.
It wasn’t the way they wanted to end, but I-95 rival DC United defeated the Union 2-0 on Saturday, Feb. 23.
Early on in the game, the Union had a few scoring chances that looked like they would take the lead. In the third minute, goalie Bill Hamid punched out a cross from Sebastien Le Toux that was destined for Jack McInerney.
Three minutes later LeToux crossed another ball into the box but it was just high of a running McInerney.
In the 30th minute, the momentum of the game shifted in D.C.’s favor after both teams had solid possession in the first third of the game. Lionard Pajoy got passed a slipping Bakary Soumare and found himself on a breakaway. Zac MacMath came out and took down Pajoy.
Initially the referee gave MacMath a straight red card, but changed it to a yellow. Either way, United had a penalty kick and De Rosario stepped up and scored.
In the 59th minute, De Rosario was given a red card for attempting to head butt an Union player. It didn’t matter for D.C being one man down as they would score again.
Pajoy would score himself later in the game. In the 67th minute, Pajoy took a one-touched shot off a pass from teammate Marcos Sanchez.
Zac MacMath did make some good saves in a game that could have been easier 3 or 4-0 in D.C. United’s favor.
Now the Union head back to Philadelphia and get ready for a home opener in a week. We have all been asking Is It March Yet? Well it almost is.
