Former owner of 3-Strikes mustang ranch guilty of animal cruelty back in jail

A western Nebraska rancher, Jason Meduna is reported to be back in jail on Friday for a parole violation in Torrington, Wyo. Meduna is being held in the Goshen County Jail.

According to the starherald.com, Captain Bryan Morehouse of the Goshen County Sheriff's Department found Meduna in possession of animals including horses.

In Jan. 2010 Meduna, 46 was found guilty of 145 counts of animal cruelty, a Class 4 felony. Seven of the counts were to specific horses, 74 counts were attributed to dead horses, and the rest of the counts related to the poor physical condition of horses found at the 3-Strikes mustang ranch in various degrees of starvation and overall neglect.

Meduna was sentenced to two consecutive terms of 40 months to 10 years in prison, and at the time was barred from owning or possessing any animals or livestock for 30 years. Last year the Nebraska Appeals Court however, overturned the lower court decision about never owning animals for 30 years, since there are no provisions for banning animal ownership in Nebraska law for animal neglect. Therefore the sentence banning Meduna from animal ownership can not be greater than the law allows.

After serving 19 months in prison, Meduna was released on discretionary parole. He has been living in the Lingle area under the alias of Jesse Raiter.

There have been no allegations of animal neglect. No decisions have been made as to whether Nebraska or Wyoming will be dealing with Meduna's parole violations.
