Former The O.C. and Southland star Benjamin Mckenzie has been cast to play the lead role as Detective Jim Gordon in Fox's upcoming Batman-themed drama Gotham. This is the first official cast announcement for Fox's new television series which explores the origins and early years of Jim Gordon's law enforcement career and Bruce Wayne training to becoming the Dark Knight. No further word on who else has been cast, but fans can expect to see early iterations of Batman's famous rogues: The Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, and the Riddler.

Mckenzie is no stranger to the Batman universe, he voiced Bruce Wayne/Batman for the direct-to-video animated movie Batman Year One. This is also his second time working alongside FOX and Warner Bros, the first being Mckenzie's breakout role in television was playing the lead character Ryan Atwood in The O.C.

The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller will pen the pilot, while Danny Cannon will direct. Visit comicbookmovie.com to read Geoff Johns and Benjamin Mckenzie tweets regarding the big news.
