When it comes to wrestling, there is no bigger name than Dan Gable. When it comes to morning sports talk radio, there is no team better than the “Mike and Mike” duo on ESPN Radio. That team consists of Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic. Golic played eight years in the NFL, but prior to that he played football and wrestled at Notre Dame.
Now Gable and Golic are teaming up together as part of the 15th annual Dan Gable Celebrity Golf Tournament on Friday, June 6 at Centennial Oaks Country Club in Waverly, Iowa. The event is part of the many events and fundraisers put on by The National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum every year.
Golic is headlining this year's star-studded event as the featured celebrity, which is sure to also include a who's who of wrestling greats, including coaches, Olympians, national champions, All-Americans and supporters of the sport. Golic played defensive tackle for the Houston Oilers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Miami Dolphins in his NFL career, but has been a big supporter of the sport of wrestling throughout his NFL and radio career. He can often be heard talking about NFL players who wrestled and how that helped assist them on their journey to the NFL.
“My love for wrestling has always equaled my love for football,” Golic said in a press release from the Museum. “So to be associated with anything Dan Gable related is an honor.”
Dan Gable, the former Iowa State collegiate standout, Olympic Gold medalist and Iowa Hawkeyes coach commented on having Golic involved with the event, saying Golic's involvement takes things to the next level.
Added Gable: "I appreciate his passion for the sport of wrestling and for his commitment to excellence. I’m excited to have Mike in Waterloo and Waverly this summer.”
The tournament includes teams of four competing in an 18-hole best ball event. Cost is $150 per person and includes green fees, cart and a dinner. There will also be a silent auction following the golf tournament.
