Former NFL star Levar Fisher to speak at Man of Fire Conference

He is stubborn and he won’t listen, just like his father. His mother does not want him hanging with the wrong crowd, but she can’t control him. If only his father cared enough to spend time with him. If only he were a better example.

Nearly two-thirds of African American households are headed by single women who find themselves trying to raise boys to become men.

These young men idolize professional athletes like Michael Jordan and Ray Lewis. Americans expect professional athletes to be role models, but many of them don’t accept this duty. Like Tiger Woods and Ben Roethlisberger, many fall short and need role models themselves. NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley summed it up this way in a 1993 Nike ad: “I am not a role model. I'm not paid to be a role model. I'm paid to wreak havoc on the basketball court. Parents should be role models. Just because I dunk a basketball, doesn't mean I should raise your kids.”

Levar Fisher approaches the subject differently. In keeping with Matthew 5:16, the former NFL star embraces his responsibilities as a role model, letting his light shine before others so that they may see his good deeds and glorify our Father in heaven. From humble beginnings as a troubled youth in North Carolina, Levar found success in the NFL, and the associated temptations brought about by money and fame. As a motivational speaker, Levar shares his life lessons and inspires kids to pursue their dreams and to avoid the pitfalls and distractions that can derail their lives.

Levar will be the guest speaker at the Man of Fire Conference which will take place on Friday, November 12, 2010 at 6:30 PM at Greater Mr. Nebo AME Church in Bowie, MD and on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 8:30 AM at Bowie High School. Dinner will be served on Friday and breakfast will be served on Saturday. This conference is sponsored by Turn ON the Light-Bowie and the Coalition of Bowie Area Men's Ministries (CoBAMM).
