More shakedown and drama continues on the west coast. First, it was the Los Angeles Clippers’ owner, Donald Sterling getting banned for life from his team and the NBA, plus getting slapped with a $2.5 million dollar fine for his recent distasteful racist remarks. Now is former New York Knicks coach, Mike D’Antoni for quitting his head post as coach of the famed Los Angeles Lakers.
For D’Antoni to quit as head coach of the Lakers, is something Los Angeles fans and former players are actually thrilled. One former Laker who actually did not hold back showing his contentment of D’Antoni’s resignation, was legend Magic Johnson.
Johnson quickly took to Twitter and tweeted: “Happy days are here again! Mike D'Antoni resigns as the Lakers coach. I couldn't be happier!”
Sadly, for the 16-time champion team, D’Antoni’s last two years with the team was nothing but disappointment. D’Antoni’s 67-87 record this season led the purple and gold team to one of their worst seasons in franchise history.
However, there are some fans and players who admittedly thought D’Antoni was not given a chance at the job, considering some of his star players like Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash were constantly on the injury list this season.
According to sports reports, D’Antoni saw his fate coming when in actuality he had one guaranteed year left on his contract, but when time came to negotiate his contract, the Lakers’ powers-at-be flatly refused.
As for the Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers, the drama will continue, for the Clippers will likely be in search of a new owner, with big names in the entertainment industry already expressing interest; like Oprah Winfrey, Sean "P-Diddy" Combs, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Oscar DeLaHoya. The Los Angeles Lakers will obviously be in search of a new head coach.
