Former governor of Va. and wife indicted on corruption charges

According to a Jan 21 article on the Times News.net, former Va. Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, were indicted Tuesday after an investigation into some gifts they received from a political donor. The McDonnells allegedly received over $120,000 in loans and other gifts from Johnnie Williams, the CEO of Star Scientific, a pharmaceutical company.

McDonnell insists that he did nothing illegal in exchange for these gifts; he assumed Mr. Williams was merely being generous. McDonnell has admitted regret about receiving the gifts and claimed to have paid back every bit with interest. He has maintained his family's innocence but conceded his own poor judgment in this matter. The former governor completed his four-year term earlier this month.

It is important to remember that the McDonnells have only been indicted at this time. The bar for indictment is not that high. (You may recall the ham sandwich analogy.) The Times-News provided the specifics of the 14-count indictment:

The 14-count indictment against McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, includes one count of conspiracy to commit honest-services wire fraud; three counts of honest-services wire fraud; one count of conspiracy to obtain property under color of official right; six counts of obtaining property under color of official right; and one count of making false statements to a federal credit union.

Bob McDonnell is also charged with an additional count of making a false statement to a financial institution, and Maureen McDonnell is charged with one count of obstruction of an official proceeding.
