Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife Maureen have been indicted on charges of receiving very lavish gifts in return for favors while the Governor was in office according to ABC News, Jan. 21, 2014. The gifts allegedly were from one company, namely the dietary supplement company Star Scientific in return for gubernatorial influence that favored the supplement company. Among the gifts that allegedly were bestowed to the the McDonnell's were a $20,000 shopping spree for First Lady Maureen, a Rolex watch for the Governor bearing the inscription, "71st Governor of Virginia," Rebecca Minkoff shoes, Louis Vuitton shoes, a fancy purse, and a whole assortment of other expensive shoes, wallets, earrings, sweatshirts, golf equipment and other items.

Additionally, Maureen McDonnell allegedly requested and received $50,000 from Jonnie Williams, the CEO of Star Scientific, after she told him that she and her husband were broke. Williams apparently also fronted a $15,000 loan to the McDonnells and described the loan as a "wedding gift."

If the McDonnells are convicted, they will have to turn all of the gifts over to the federal government. Allegedly Williams also loaned McDonnell his Ferrari so he could drive it while staying at Williams' vacation home in Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia.

McDonnell left office eleven days ago and was succeeded by Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat. Prosecutors deliberately waited until after the transition of power was complete before indicting the former Governor and his wife Maureen. At one time, McDonnell was considered a likely future Presidential candidate.
