Former Flames lead Canada to win at Spengler Cup

According to the Hockey Canada website, two former Calgary Flames led Canada to victory on the opening day of the 2013 Spengler Cup from Davos, Switzerland on Thursday.

Defenceman Micki Dupont, a native of Calgary, and center Byron Ritchie each scored for Canada in a 5-4 victory over HC Vitkovice Steel of the Czech Republic.

Dupont, who currently plays for the Kloten Flyers in the Swiss National League A, took a slap shot from the point on the power play in the second period to tie the game at three goals apiece. Ritchie meanwhile, who currently plays for SC Bern in the Swiss National League A, scored on a goal from Dupont and Eric Beaudoin of Ottawa, Ontario at 7:58 of the third period to tie the game at four goals apiece.

Team Canada got its winning goal from Derrick Walser with 6:13 left in the third period.

With the win, Canada has a day of rest and will play HC Davos for first place in the Cattini Division on Saturday afternoon.

Dupont played for the Flames from 2001-03, while Ritchie played for the Flames from 2005-07.
