Former Dolphins receiver Freddie Solomon dies

Freddie Solomon, who played as a receiver for the Dolphins in the mid-seventies, has died.

He was 59.

Solomon lost his nine-month battle with colon cancer on Monday.

He was drafted by Miami in the 1975 NFL draft as the 36th overall pick in the second round.

He spent two years with the Dolphins before moving on to join the 49ers from 1978 through 1985.

He won two Super Bowl titles with San Francisco.

His second championship came against his former team when the 49ers defeated the Dolphins 38-16 in Super Bowl XIX.

Solomon caught 371 passes for 5,846 yards in his distinguished NFL career.

He averaged 15.8 yards per catch.

Solomon was also well-known for his work off the field as he gave a considerable amount of his time and money to charitable causes.

"He was a kind and generous person," said  Dolphins vice president Nat Moore.

"It's a shame he passed away so young, and the Miami Dolphin organization extends its condolences to his family."

In his statement released by the Dolphins, Moore also discussed how versatile an athlete Solomon was as a quarterback in college and then as a receiver in the league.

"He was one of the first multi-purpose quarterbacks coming out of college who helped establish a style that Michael Vick and others would go on to perfect."

"With his skills, if he played quarterback in the NFL today, he would be able to attack defenses in so many ways, especially in the Wildcat.

Solomon is survived by his wife, Dee. Funeral services are expected to be held this Friday in Tampa.
