Former Dino coach named CEO of CIS Thursday

According to the Canadian Press, former University of Calgary Dinos swim coach Pierre Lafontaine has been named the new chief executive officer for Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

Lafontaine was the Dinos' assistant coach in swimming from 1988 to 1992.

Since 2005, Lafontaine had been the chief executive officer and head coach of the national swim team. Lafontaine replaces Marg McGregor who held the job for 12 years.

According to Dan Ralph, Lafontaine's primary goal is to encourage more Canadian high school students remain in Canada for post secondary studies rather than go to the United States. The goal is a lofty one, especially for athletes who participate in summer sports, who are at a definite disadvantage in their training regime for international events if they do not go the United States, because of the warmer climate.

The other disadvantage that Lafontaine is presented is the fact that the National Collegiate Athletic Association offers complete and full athletic scholarships, something that does not happen in Canada.
