Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick found guilty on Monday

A jury found former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick guilty on Monday, finishing a five-month trial. Kilpatrick could face more than ten years in prison for numerous convictions, from racketeering conspiracy to bribery and tax crimes. Kilpatrick will await his sentencing in jail.

Businesses said they were forced to hire specific subcontractors or lose work through the city’s water department. Emma Bell, a fundraiser, said she gave Kilpatrick more than $200,000 as his “personal cut” of political donations. Derrick Miller, an aide for Kilpatrick, stated he was a common intermediary for the former mayor, passing bribes between Kilpatrick and other associates. Internal Revenue Service agents stated that Kilpatrick spent almost one million dollars more than his salary as mayor from 2002 to 2008, $840,000 beyond his salary during that six-year period.

Kilpatrick was forced out of office in 2008 after a series of lies while he attempted to cover up an affair with an aide. It was also said that Kilpatrick abused a nonprofit fund he created to help “distressed” Detroit residents, the Civic Fund. Kilpatrick’s father, Bernard, was convicted of submitting a false tax return. Kilpatrick’s mother, Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, lost her re-election to Congress in 2010, in part because of her son’s problems.
