Former Denton police detective Robert "Bobby" Lozano to serve 45 years for wife's murder

Robert “Bobby” Lozano was ordered to pay $10,000 in fines and serve 45 years for the 2002 shooting murder of his wife, Viki.

The former Denton police detective was convicted on Friday and sentenced today. The trial lasted 2 weeks.

Lozano's wife, was found shot to death in her bedroom with his service revolver in July 2002.

He initially told investigators she had shot herself while cleaning the weapon, but his attorneys tried to convince the jury it was suicide.

In closing arguments, both prosecutors and defense attorneys portrayed Bobby Lozano as an adulterer, but the defense attorney reminded jurors that "beyond a reasonable doubt" was the standard that must be applied.

No new witnesses were offered by the state during the penalty phase. Defense attorney Rick Hagen brought one witness, Frank Lozano, a University of North Texas police officer who asked the jury for leniency.

Prosecutors Cary and Susan Piel did not ask for a specific number of years but asked them to consider all the victims that Lozano left.

Hagen asked the jury to consider Lozano’s 16 years of dedication of the Denton Police Department.
