Former Day's Fashions Employee, Louella Buck is Fondly Remembered

Louella Buck is fondly remembered by the community she served and by those who knew Her. The first African American Buyer in Hamtramck, MI, Louella was hired by the Silver family who owned and operated Day's Fashion's. Her 'fashion sense' was respected by many during her employment with the landmark retail store. She was employed for 25 of the company's 99 years of existence; the establishment is still in operation under new owner, Mrs. Sunhee Kim.

Born on July 3, 1935, Louella passed away on December 28, 2013. Her official obituary is featured on page D-5 in the January 15-21 (paper) edition of The Michigan Chronicle. The following is information was obtained from that article.

"After graduating from the Highland Park public school system Louella remained active in the church. Entering the work force, she became a buyer for Day's Fashion from which she retired after 25 years. In her later years she volunteered her time and services to the Detroit community. After retirement Louella would volunteer her time to the community; at metropolitan Detroit hospitals, the Michigan State Fair, and the Free Press Grand Prix Marathon Races, as well as Fox and Fisher theaters. Louella received a tribute for her volunteer services at Henry Ford Health System and she also earned a place on the State of Michigan Volunteer Honor Roll.

Among those Louella Buck leaves behind three daughters, Jacqueline Beaird, Kimberly Jackson of Nashville,Tenn. and Chequita King of Detroit; sisters Almira Mathis of Detroit; Bettie Davis of Waterford, Miss.; brothers Dudley Lewellen of Memphis, Tenn., and Larry Dortch of Chicago Ill., as well as several grandchildren, extended family members, friends, and church family."
