Former Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, a key player in the Prime Minister Stephen Harper administration, has died at the age of 64. Emergency crews were reportedly sent to his Ottawa home Thursday afternoon – there were earlier reports that he was in critical condition.

The details to the cause of death have yet to be released.

It has been known for quite a while that Flaherty suffered from a rare and painful skin disorder. When he issued his statement that he was leaving politics in favor of the private sector last month, he confirmed that his health was not a factor in his final decision.

Flaherty was first elected to the House of Commons in 2006. He previously served as a Member of Provincial Parliament in Ontario from 1995 to 2005. He served as deputy premier, minister of finance, attorney general and minister of labour.
