Ference, a defenseman, signed a four year contact worth $13 million in the off-season with the Oilers. In 2012-13 with Boston, Ference had four goals and nine assists for 13 points in 48 games. Ference played with the Flames from 2002-07 and was a key member of the Flames team that went to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004.
A native of Edmonton, Ference won a Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins in 2011. The Oilers were in need of a new captain after they traded Shawn Horcoff to the Dallas Stars for Philip Larsen and a seventh round draft pick on July 4.
Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins made the initial announcement that Ference would be the captain on twitter. On his account, @dallaseakins he stated Sunday morning, "Andrew Ference will UNITE us. 14th Captain in Edmonton Oiler history".
The Edmonton Oilers will begin their regular season on Tuesday evening in Ednmonton against the Winnipeg Jets.
