Former Boy Scout volunteer convicted of sexual relations with minors

This is the type of news story that only empowers the Boy Scouts of America's ban against GLBT from being a part of the scouts. Jon Demers, 54, a former Boy Scout volunteer in Collisville was found guilty on 12-counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse on Thursday. Demers was a volunteer for the Troop 520 chapter which operates in the Signal Hill area as a merit badge counselor. In addition, he is a retired Lt. Colonel but also worked as a civilian while stationed at Scott Air Force Base.

Reportedly, the abuse began in 2005 when the victim was only 10-years old. The abuse continued for nearly 6-years at Demer;s home and other locations between Illinois and Missouri. After he was arrested, he admitted to sexually molesting other children.

Bond has been reduced from $1-million to $350-thousand which Demers posted in April 2011. Demers has since been placed on house arrest. In August 2011, additional victims came forward. Additional charges include 2-counts of criminal sexual assault and 5-counts of aggravated sexual abuse.

The new bond has been reset to the sum of 1-million dollars based on the new charges. The jurors deliberated for a couple of hours before finding him guilty.

Total Charges

  1. Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse (17-counts)
  2. Criminal Sexual Assault (2-counts)
