Outfielder Jason Michaels inked a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals on Friday, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America.
Michaels, 35, hit .199 (31-for-156) with two home runs, 10 RBI and nine doubles in 89 games for the Houston Astros last season.
He underwent season-ending surgery on a broken left hand in September.
The veteran outfielder served as a backup and was mainly called upon as a pinch hitter over his three seasons with the Astros.
With the Astros moving forward with younger ballplayers and focusing on scouting and player development, it was unlikely the organization would attempt to re-sign Michaels as a free agent.
Michaels is hitting .263 with 59 home runs and 299 RBI over 1,031 games in 11 career major league seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians, Pittsburgh Pirates and Astros.
