Ex-Astros shortstop Adam Everett was hired by the Cleveland Indians on Friday morning as a special assistant to baseball operations.
The Indians announced the hiring via a statement.
As part of his duties, Everett will be in uniform for the majority of Spring Training, with involvement in infield instruction and player and staff development during Major and Minor League camps.
He will provide instruction for infielders and evaluation in the Indians' player-development system over the course of next season.
Everett, who turns 35 on Feb. 5, joins the Indians' front office after hitting .217 with a double in 34 games for Cleveland last season.
He recently concluded his 11-season major league career.
Everett inked a minor league contract with the Indians prior to the 2011 campaign with the hope of earning an Opening Day roster spot.
Despite breaking camp last spring with Cleveland, he was designated for assignment in late June and released three days later.
Everett, a former University of South Carolina standout, was selected by Boston in the first round of the 1998 First-Year Player Draft.
The Red Sox dealt him, along with left-hander Greg Miller, to Houston on Dec. 14, 1999 in order to acquire outfielder Carl Everett.
He made his major league debut with the Astros on Aug. 30, 2001 and ultimately played seven seasons in Houston under the guidance of former skippers Larry Dierker, Jimy Williams and Phil Garner.
Everett appeared in 19 total postseason games for Houston between 2004-05, which included playing in the 2005 World Series.
Throughout his tenure in Houston, he became one of the top defensive shortstops in the National League, as evident with earning Gold Glove Award votes over a four-season period (2003-06).
Everett signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Twins after the Astros elected not to offer him a contract as a result of acquiring 2002 AL MVP Miguel Tejada from the Orioles on Dec. 12, 2007.
He played his next two seasons with the Detroit Tigers and continued a tour of the AL Central by joining the Indians in 2011.
Everett hit .242 with 40 home runs and 283 RBI over his 11 career major league seasons with the Astros, Twins, Tigers and Indians.
