It was reported on Friday, January 25th, 2013 in this article, that 9 former African American, American Idol contestants were planning to sue the hit reality show because they say that the producer of the show is racist. They have alleged that just because they are African American that their criminal histories were called out. These 9 former contestants didn’t tell the truth about their criminal history and when American Idol did the usual background check that they do on every contestant, they found out about their criminal history. This forced them to disqualify the former contestants. The past contestants of the reality show are claiming that American Idol solely picked on them because they are African American.
As reported in this article, there has been an update that 3 finalists; Melinda Doolittle, Vonzell Solomon and Casey Abrams and the winner of Season 5, Taylor Hicks came forward to support American Idol and slam the racism speculation. They said Idol may be picky but they are not racist.
The newest update on this story, according to TMZ since they found footage on it, is that the twins; Terrell and Derrell were seen with American Idol producer, Nigel Lythgoe in New York City praising him for giving them their big break. However, they are still planning to sue.
