The soap opera community is shocked and saddened by the unexpected death of actor Matthew Cowles (ex Billy Clyde).

Not only was Cowles fabulous in the soap role, he was known for a huge body of television, stage and screen work, including ‘Sweet Bird of Youth,’ ‘Oz,’ ‘Life on Mars,’ ‘The Juror,’ and ‘American Loser.’

Back in 1997, Cowles spent some time on the CBS soap ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ (Curtis Love).

Among all of his impressive roles, Cowles was simply unforgettable as the colorful ‘AMC’ pimp Billy Clyde. We were first introduced to the character back in 1984.

Long time ‘All My Children’ fans remember the character came to us during an early story involving prostitute Donna Beck (Candace Earley).

Cowles returned to the Internet version of ‘All My Children’ in the summer of 2013.

The New York born actor was married to actress Christine Baranski (‘Cybil,’ ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ ‘The Good Wife’) for over 30 years. Cowles and Baranski have two grown daughters.

The cause of Cowles’ death has yet to be confirmed.
