Forgetting and remembering joy

See also

Wednesday, December 4, 2013: Yesterday I was reminded of the phrase “Phoenix rising from the ashes” and it dawned on me that this an apt analogy for the month ahead. And... just in case you don't know how the story goes....

The phoenix is a colorful mythical bird that at the end of its life builds a nest out of myrrh, which later ignites and burns both the phoenix and nest to ashes. But its end is really its beginning, because out of the ashes arises a new, young phoenix ready to begin life again. Related article... So... If you've felt like you've been in a furiously burning fire for the past several weeks... as life presented you with challenging circumstances that left you just barely hanging on... this month marks a time when you, like the Phoenix, will begin burning back to life and rising from the ashes.

Look back and realize you had little control over what happened and the best you could do was just hang on and ride the waves. Everything weighed on you... life became dark and foreboding... and you forgot the joy.

This time of year is always about remembering the joy... and that's even more important this year.

It's now time to make a to do list of "want-to-dos' and everytime you feel yourself slipping back into the dark... pull out the list and do something enjoyable or productive. Be mindful and pay special attention to the basics of daily living – good diet, exercise and limited alcohol.

Life will shift if you make a commitment to finding joy and direction in your moment to moment experience. Consider that each moment contains a kernel of truth, a clarity, a “yes” that can show you the way. Don't get so caught up in finding a solution or pay so much attention of the stories running through your mind that you miss the small truths and joys in every moment.

This month is about pausing, finding joy, returning to happiness and realizing that you've been through the fire... emerged strong, whole and are almost ready to embark on a new adventure.

Today's Quote

“In my own worst seasons I've come back from the colorless world of despair by forcing myself to look hard, for a long time, at a single glorious thing: a flame of red geranium outside my bedroom window. And then another: my daughter in a yellow dress. And another: the perfect outline of a full, dark sphere behind the crescent moon. Until I learned to be in love with my life again. Like a stroke victim retraining new parts of the brain to grasp lost skills, I have taught myself joy, over and over again.” ~ Barbara Kingsolver, High Tide In Tucson: Essays From Now Or Never
