Rep. Bob Filner (Calif. D) says banks are foreclosing on military families and they need to be more lenient and that foreclosures are devastating thousands of troops and their families.
"Those who are fighting in Afghanistan or on assignment in Iraq are facing foreclosures now," said Filner.
"I called the banks on numerous occasions and explained our hardship and they said due to investor guidelines they couldn't do anything for us," said Gabriella Stumetz during a press conference. Stumetz's husband is overseas and she is working, taking care of their children and a disabled brother.
"They freeze your accounts where you're not able to pay for your gas or living expenses. It's very, very difficult," she said.
Filner is a chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs and the work that he has done for the benefit of veterans is well known.
"The banks are foreclosing on them (military families). The banks we gave 700, 800 million dollars to stop these foreclosures," said Filner
Filner is introducing a bill that will have give a one year moratorium for returning service members and allow disables veterans to use 25% of their income to mortgages, and the state to subsidize the difference.
"How can we let them be foreclosed on? This is a disgrace," said Filner
