Ed Fitch, the author of many Pagan books and a leader of the Pagan community in the greater LA area, won several skirmishes in his home foreclosure war, but apparently not the battle. Unfortunately he is just one in millions. In the U.S. there are about 2.5 million homes that have been repossessed since 2005 and 6 million others are in the foreclosure process. There seems to be no end to the hardships that have fallen upon many in this country.
“The place is stripped,” Ed Fitch reported on Tuesday of his Orange County home of 31 years as he showed off the empty rooms. He was not without a little nostalgia, though. “I raised my kids here, had a lot of pets,” he said. Then he laughed, “Had a lot of parties – pagan parties, the best kind!”
Expecting to depart on Wednesday, Fitch loaded seven large storage bins with the possessions of a lifetime – “the books were the heaviest” – and consigned them to a storage space. “I can only figure it being much like the warehouse in the ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ movie.”
During his final weeks in the house, he issued several calls for friends to stop by to take anything they wanted of the property he was leaving behind, including even a washer and dryer.
The bank that held the mortgage on his home – lost due to a bad business investment – was seeking $75 per day rent from him to remain in his – now their – house. So he concluded it was time to go, leaving a $500,000 mortgage debt behind. “From here on I buy nothing I can’t pay cash for.”
Fitch expected to visit with Poke Runyon in Silverado Canyon for a day or two before heading to Texas to live with his oldest son. He looks forward to writing and publishing more books in his new domicile in the Lone Star state. Volumes on Viking shamanism and Mongolian shamanism are possible projects. He has a vampire novel manuscript in hand, and thinks his notes for a lecture on the “Dark Goddess” also could become the basis for a book.
So Fitch says the fiasco of foreclosure, bringing big changes in his life, may just be clearing the ground and preparing new opportunities for him to do important work and publish more books. He has navigated some heavy seas this year. Appropriately, one project may soon go to a publisher. “My book on pirate magic is complete.”
