Ford to build next-generation Explorer in Chicago

   2010 Ford Explorer

According to the Chicago Tribune, Ford will be shifting production of the next-generation of its Explorer SUV from Louisville, Ky. to its plant here on Chicago's South Side.

The next Explorer hasn't been unveiled yet, but industry experts expect that it will be a car-based crossover.

If production is shifted to the plant--which is on Torrance Avenue, a second shift and 1,200 jobs could be added. A Ford stamping plant in Chicago Heights would also need to increase production.

The Explorer will likely launch in the last quarter of the year and share its platform with the Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS sedans, both of which are built in Chicago.
