Sé Merry Doyle tells me his well-received documentary, “Dreaming the Quiet Man,” should finally get a US release this month via Loopline Film. This will be very welcome news to the many fans of a certain John Wayne-Maureen O’Hara film, judging by the continuing popularity of my ebook “John Ford’s The Quiet Man: The Making of a Cult Classic” (available at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00913HROE).

Ford was unable to recapture the magic when he returned to Ireland to make “The Rising of the Moon,” but this 1957 film (available on DVD from Warner Archive) is a delight nonetheless. Jimmy O’Dea, the clown prince of Eireann, is featured an hilarious sequence called “A Few Minutes Wait.” Cyril Cusack, Noel Purcell, Denis O’Dea, Donal Donnelly and many Abbey Theatre players are seen in the other two sequences, notably “1921,” set during the Irish Civil War. A must for Ford fans and lovers of Ireland.

“Ria Mooney: The Life and Times of the Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre, 1948-1963” by James P. McGlone (available in paperback from McFarland & Co.) is a reprint of the author’s well-researched 2002 book. The renowned actress-producer made her mark both onstage (particularly as a prostitute in the 1926 debut of Sean O’Casey’s “The Plough and the Stars”) and behind the scenes but has been largely forgotten; this bio supplies much evidence why she should be remembered.

A lively solo piece I enjoyed at the Hollywood Fringe a few years ago, Máire Clerkin’s “The Bad Arm–Confessions of a Dodgy Irish Dancer,” will be performed Mar. 29-30 at Theatre Asylum-Elephant Space in Hollywood. It’s a seriocomic tale of a young lady in 1970s England. For info: badarm.brownpapertickets.com or 800-838-3006. (The Fringe itself will return Jun. 5-29).

For you Anglophiles out there, I recommend “The Agatha Christie Hour: Complete Collection” (available on DVD from Acorn Media),10 tales of mystery, murder and romance set in England’s Art Deco era. Rupert Everett, Christopher Cazenove, Stephanie Cole and Amanda Redman are among the actors featured. Those who like their mysteries more on the contemporary side are advised to check out “Vera,” starring two-time Oscar nominee Brenda Blethyn as Chief Inspector Stanhope. “Set 3” (also on DVD from Acorn) includes four episodes on four discs.
