Ford Motor Company announced today that it is recalling more than 205,000 model year 2004 and 2005 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey vehicles due to potentially defective transmission component. The recall affects all vehicles manufactured for the included model years.
According to information contained within the defect notice Ford provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall results from a defective torque converter pump shaft. Specifically, the supplier manufactured torque convertors using a pump shaft spline that did not always meet specified heat treating requirements. As a result, the pump shaft splines on some torque convertors may experience excessive wear, leading to torque convertor failure and the loss of motive power (the ability for the vehicle to move in forward or reverse gears) without warning, increasing the risk for being involved in a crash.
To correct the problem, Ford will replace the torque convertor free of charge. Ford expects to begin notifying affected owners during the second quarter of 2012, which is when the company anticipates parts will be available to perform repairs.
