The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on March 18 that Ford is recalling 5,675 model year 2013 Ford Escape, C-Max and Focus vehicles that have an incorrect rear door child lock installed on the driver side.
The result is that the normal turning of the device to activate the door child lock may not actually engage the lock causing the driver to believe the door child lock is activated when it is not.
Without the door lock engaged, the door can be opened by using the inside handle which could result in an unrestrained child falling out or being ejected from the vehicle resulting in possible injury to the child.
All of the vehicles involved were built at two Ford plants in Nov. of 2012.
Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries that have occurred as result of this incorrect door child lock installation.
Ford is notifying owners under March date.
Owners will be requested to bring their vehicles into a dealer for inspection and replacement of the lock assembly at no charge to the owner.
The Ford recall number is 13S02.
Owners may call the Ford Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332 if they have any questions.
