Ford plans to dump Microsoft for BlackBerry to power SYNC technology

Citing numerous software problems with the automaker’s SYNC automotive technology system, the Detroit News reported on Saturday that the Ford Motor Company is planning to dump Microsoft for BlackBerry to power future SYNC systems.

The switch from Microsoft to BlackBerry and its QNX operating system could happen as early as later this year.

Current SYNC system problematic

Commenting on the possible plans for Ford to dump Microsoft for BlackBerry, Automotive News states that Ford has been struggling with in-car technology glitches and has received negative ratings and comments in various auto reliability studies because of the problems.

Ford SYNC technology allows you to talk on the phone, and navigate your music system while keeping your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. There are four different versions of SYNC, from a basic hands free phone and music control system, to a navigation system with a large LCD screen with 3D maps and voice-enabled directions. The Ford Motor Company first announced the release of SYNC powered by Microsoft in January 2007.

With hands free mobile and entertainment technology systems becoming one of the top selling points for auto buyers, Ford is looking to address the many problems with the current SYNC system by dumping Microsoft for the BlackBerry owned QNX technology.

A definite software upgrade

QNX Software Systems currently provides embedded systems and automotive technology for many vendors including luxury automobile manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi.

QNX Software Systems is owned by BlackBerry, but is totally independent of the parent company known for their line of wireless handheld devices. The Ottawa-based QNX acquired by BlackBerry in 2010, has been in business for over 30 years.
