From Feb 15-17, the Museum of Discovery and Science, in partnership with Ford Motor Company Fund, features the 6th annual DESIGN NATION: Build It Challenge. Based on the popular PBS television series, the three-day event will offer families the opportunity to participate in challenges that unleash their kids' ingenuity and get them thinking like engineers.

Visitors can test their skills with hands-on, friendly competitions and interactive activities, such as: displaying teamwork to create a paper table sturdy enough to hold stacks of books, using every day materials to build a roller coaster, plus additional engineering feats. All Design Nation activities are included with exhibit admission.

“The Design Nation program offers a wonderful opportunity to test family teamwork skills in constructing awesome creations while inspiring and motivating young students to excel in math and science,” added Marlene Janetos, VP Visitor Services and Marketing.

Community partners Bricks 4 Kidz will host the Bricktastic Build-Off on Saturday (2/15) and Sunday, (2/16). There, children of all ages can enter this construction contest and take on the challenge of designing and building a one-of-a-kind structure using Lego® bricks. Prizes will be awarded and the winners will be chosen on the Museum’s Facebook page.

While today’s engineers are leading a technological revolution that continues to improve the way we live, play and work, many kids and adults, alike, may not understand how technology impacts their everyday activities - from running water to running cars. The Design Nation: Build It Challenge is one way the Museum is helping to educate families about the important role engineers play in making the world smarter.

Visitors are invited to participate in a variety of interactive experiments, including the Humpty Dumpty Egg Drop (1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., & 4 p.m.), where you design a padded capsule or parachute to cushion your egg’s two-story fall. You can also utilize everyday materials to design and build your own working catapult and roller coaster in the Catapults and Roller Coasters area. At Snap Circuits, you can make a doorbell, ring? A light bulb, light? A radio, beep? Explore these first steps toward your own engineering inventions. In the Paper Table Build-Off (12:30 p.m. & 2:30 p.m.,) you are invited to compete against other families to create the strongest table using only newspaper and tape. How much weight can your table hold? During the Bricktastic Build-Off (Saturday and Sunday only), Ages 5 – 7; 1 p.m., Ages 8- 12; 2:15 p.m., Ages 13 & up; 3:30 p.m., you can enter this construction contest and take on the challenge of designing and building a one-of-a-kind structure using Lego ® Bricks. Prizes awarded to the winners chosen by our Facebook fans.

The mission of the Museum of Discovery and Science is to provide experiential pathways to lifelong learning in science for children and adults through exhibits, programs and films. The Museum is open seven days a week, 365 days a year; Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. with extended IMAX® hours on most evenings. All Design Nation activities are included with exhibit admission. Exhibit admission prices are $14 for adults; $13 seniors (ages 65+); $12 children (ages 2 to 12). Children under 2 are free. The Museum of Discovery and Science is located downtown at 401 SW Second Street, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312.
