Busted by Florida Highway Patrol, the famous Ford GT was apprehended after a healthy night of racing in the bay. Racing against some of the fastest vehicles in Tampa, we get to see what the street racing scene in Tampa could bring to the table . The first race was against a very well built 2004 Cobra on 15 psi from a ported blower with nitrous. All the modifications to the air machine made it so effective that it was able to run side by side with the Ford GT. That's pretty good! Then a second race with a Toyota Supra was intended but was disrupted by the friendly folks from Florida Highway Patrol.
In this video, we get to see the legal loop hole exploited for our viewing pleasure. According to the officers in this video, the lawyer of the defendant gets a copy of the footage used during the arrest. So we get to see both sides of the action. Take this quote from the Florida Highway Patrol taken during the video for consideration, "that Ferrari thing.." The Ford GT is an elusive beast lurking under a cloak of exotic styling.

Even though this video shows illegal street racing in Tampa, the actual statistics here aren't that bad. Most people go to the raceways or hangout at meets. There really isn't much street racing going on here anymore. If you'll notice, the video says 2007. That's when the state started really cracking down on street racing shortly after the whole Nick Bollea Toyota Supra episode. It really brought a lot of attention to Tampa for street racing and thus the immediate increase in track events and drop in illegal racing. If you go looking for street racing today, you won't find it unless you go to the tracks; it's pretty much dead thanks to strict enforcement as we see below.
