Hurtigruten, which is celebrating its 120th anniversary this year, will begin its winter season on November 1, and the hunt for Northern Lights begins. The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, is a natural phenomenon that fills the night sky with yellow, green or red-violent belts of color, arising with little advance notice. On any Hurtigruten cruise along the Norwegian coastline, the crew keeps an eye out and will notify passengers who have signed up to be awoken if the lights are visible.
Of course, these cruises will also stop at ports along the way, reason enough to go for many passengers, and on the Hunt for Northern Lights sailings, onboard and off-ship activities, menus and excursions are inspired by the winter season. Guests can take a “dip” in the frigid Barents Sea, participate in a fish filleting demonstration on deck, take a snowmobile trip in the polar night for a star-studded sky, go dog sledding, and enjoy seasonal and locally-procured menu items.
Special winter packages and incentives are now in place. Additional information and reservations can be obtained from travel agents or Hurtigruten's website, www.hurtigruten.us, and by phone at 877-301-3117. To order brochures 24 hours a day, call 800-582-0835.
Hurtigruten has made a stellar reputation of sailing to frigid waters. We can attest to that because we cruised to Antarctica aboard the MS. Fram. Based on what we did there, we can say that if you have seeing the Northern Lights on your bucket list (as it is ours), this company can put you in a place to do it.
